The old forge at Chaumont(15 people)
Staying in the “gite ” of the chateau’s old forge ( sleeps up to 15 people), situated right beside the huge C17th stables with unrivalled views over the neighbouring pastureland and their surrounds, the Avaise forest, and the Charolais hills, this huge building – the chateau’s former forge – is waiting to welcome you here for your holidays.
The former forge of the chateau (approximatly 285 M2) can take up to 15 people. Outside of the two months of July and August there is also a smaller gite available just for week-ends ; – the gate-keepers cottage thus bringing the total number of people who could be accommodated up to 21. The Chateau’s old forge has it’s own enclosed private garden, a terrace with electrically operated sun-blinds and an above-ground pool. Garden furniture and a barbeque also enhance outisde living.
Travel Information for Visitors:
Situated only a train journey away ; – 2 hours by train from Geneva, 1 hour and 20 minutes from Beaune, 1 hour and 10 minutes from Lyon, and 1 hour from either Chalon or Villefranche-sur-Saone . The T.G.V. (express train ) station of Le Creusot is only 40 minutes drive away, that of Macon is 35 minutes drive away and it is a 25 minute drive from Cluny or from Paray-le-Monial, and only a 15 minute drive from Charolles.
Having arived in the village of Saint-Bonnet-de-Joux in the main square (Place du du Champ du Foire) take the D7 in the direction of Genelard for 1,2 kilometers , turn right just after seeing the sign to show you are leaving the village of Saint-Bonnet-de-Joux; and this will bring you to a turning where you will see the sign “Ecuries du chateau de Chaumont .” Turn right at this sign, follow the road through the woods continuing past the main chateau entrance gate on your right and then turn right amongst the farm buildings into the courtyard. You’ve arrived!

The breathe-taking view from the old forge right across the opposite valley is something qute extraordinary and serves as your base from which to discover the peace of this area. Lovers of all things Roman and of Roman architecture will find all they could wish for here. Charolles (15 minutes from the Domain), known as the local “Venice,”of the Charolais area, and the cradle of the famous breeds of cattle known the world over, is a town where you’ll discover several excellent gastronimic restaurants ; ranging from the starred restaurant of Frédéric Doucet to the less well known, but no less delicious, reasonably priced restaruant called “La Petite Venice.” Saint-Bonnet-de-Joux with it’s weekly market (recommended for fresh vegetables and fruit ) has all the traditional types of local shops including hairdressers, chemist, bakers, and a butcher-cum-caterer for any entertaining you do whilst in the gite, and a large branch of the “Super U” supermarket.
